Session Title
Thought or Real Problem?
Core message
Not every thought is a task.”
Psychoeducation
A real problem has specific characteristics:
- it exists in the present,
- action is available,
- and it can be broken into steps.
Rumination usually focuses on assumptions, scenarios, the past, or questions without clear answers.
Example of a real problem:
“I need to send an email before 5 PM.”
Example of a loop:
“Why am I like this?”
“What does this mean?”
“What if I will always feel this way?”
CBT and RF-CBT approaches often help people distinguish between useful and unhelpful thinking in order to reduce repetitive negative thinking.
Avatar Introduction:
“Today you will learn a simple distinction:
Is this something I can solve —
or a thought asking for more thought?”
Video Script:
“Ask yourself:
Can I do something practical right now?
If yes, take one small step.
If not, stop continuing the analysis.”
Exercise:
Take one thought that is occupying your mind and place it into one of two categories:
A — Action is possible now.
OR
B — No action is possible now.
If it is category B, say:
“This is not a problem to solve.
It is a thought to observe.”
Reminder:
“Not every thought is a task.”
