Psychoeducation
Detached mindfulness means observing a thought
without entering into it.
It does not mean emptying the mind.
It does not mean forcing yourself to relax.
And it does not mean suppressing thoughts.
It means recognizing thoughts as mental events —
not commands.
In Metacognitive Therapy, detached mindfulness helps reduce involvement with internal dialogues, repetitive thinking, and mental checking.
The goal is not:
“How do I stop thoughts?”
The goal is:
“How do I stop automatically following them?”
Avatar Introduction:
“Today, we will not try to push thoughts away.
We will learn not to follow them.”
Video Script:
“Imagine a thought as a notification on your phone.
You notice it.
But you do not have to open it.
Thoughts can appear
without becoming conversations.”
Exercise:
When a difficult thought appears, say:
“I notice that the thought appeared that…”
Example:
“I notice that the thought appeared that something is wrong.”
Then stop there.
Do not continue the analysis.
Do not argue with the thought.
Simply notice it — and return attention to what you were doing.
Reminder:
“You do not need to change the thought.
You need to change your relationship with it.”
